New Bihar Cabinet: CM Choudhary retains 29 depts; two deputy CMs named
Bihar is undergoing a major political transition as Nitish Kumar stepped down from the post of CM, paving the way for a BJP-led government in the state for the first time. Samrat Choudhary has been elected as the leader of BJP legislative party. The development comes as Kumar, who heads the JD(U) and was recently elected to the Rajya Sabha, moves toward concluding his long tenure as chief minister. The transition was set in motion through a cabinet meeting in Patna, which ministers described as emotional, with expressions of gratitude and reflection on Kumar’s long political and administrative journey in the state.Following the meeting, Nitish formally tendered his resignation to the governor after completing procedural requirements, including informing his cabinet colleagues. His resignation would mark the formal end of the current government and initiate the process for formation of a new administration under the National Democratic Alliance. The BJP, which is the single largest party in the 243-member Bihar Assembly with 89 MLAs, is scheduled to hold a legislature party meeting to elect its leader. This decision is crucial as it will effectively determine the next chief ministerial face of the state. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is being widely discussed as a potential frontrunner due to his organisational role and political prominence, although party insiders suggest the final decision will be taken by the BJP’s central leadership, which has in the past opted for surprise choices in key states.Once the legislature party leader is chosen, all NDA legislators—comprising 202 MLAs across alliance partners including JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha—are expected to meet to formally demonstrate majority support before approaching the governor to stake claim for government formation.JD(U) leaders have indicated that even after stepping down, Nitish Kumar is likely to remain active in Bihar politics and continue to play a guiding role in the evolving political arrangement, signalling continuity amid leadership change.
